One question our clients frequently ask is what activities are available at the various Ports of Call while cruising. We thought we would answer this question by doing a series of blog posts on the most popular ports of call. Do you have a port of call you would like featured? Leave us a comment below. In the mean time, here is the first port: Santorini, Greece.
Santorini, Greece is considered one of the most beautiful cities to visit. Therefore, it is not surprising that this is such a common stop. Depending on which cruise line you are on you will either stop at the Fira or Athinos port and then transfer via bus or boat to your excursion of choice. Here are just a handful of things you can do at the Santorini Port of Call:
  1. Volcano hiking tour: Santorini was created thousands of years ago when Thera, a volcano that is still active, erupted. In fact, Santorini is the world's largest volcanic crater. Because of Santorini’s rich volcanic history, most cruise lines offer tours of the volcanoes and hot springs.
  2. Food and wine sampling: From Greek wine and breaking plates to Greek food and traditional dancing, food and wine tours are often the first excursions to fill up. Options could include tours of the winery in Oia or wine tastings in Ancient Akrotiri.
  3. Riding 4x4s: For the truly adventurous many cruise lines offer the rugged tour of Santorini by 4X4. You’ll need the ability to drive a manual transmission and the energy to keep up on this fast paced adventure, but the views and the swim break during this excursion will be worth it.
  4. Red Beach: The Red Beach is widely thought of as the most beautiful and famous beach in Santorini. This and other beaches are relatively easy to get to via bus or taxi from the ports.
Have you ever been to Santorini as a Port of Call on a cruise? If so, what was your favorite thing about this port of call?
