This following is a guest post by “The Famous Ashley Grant”. Ashley is a writer and photographer based in Tampa, Fla. Ashley went on a trip to Thailand with her husband this past Thanksgiving and after learning about her visit to such an exotic location I had to ask her to write about the trip. Here’s what she had to say:
You know that saying hindsight is 20/20? Well, after our trip to Thailand that saying rings so true! Although my husband and I did have a decent time there we would have likely enjoyed our trip to Phuket more as a day long excursion via a cruise ship than the four day stay complete with two days of airline travel that it was…but let me back up for a moment.
We were looking for something adventurous to do during Thanksgiving because my husband had two weeks of vacation he had to take before the end of 2014. Upon learning that Thanksgiving was a popular time to visit Thailand and after reading a bunch of glowing reviews about how cheap the accommodations and restaurants there were we went ahead and booked two roundtrip tickets to Bangkok, Thailand. We spent a few days in Bangkok and a few days in Pattaya, and then booked flights to Phuket so we could see it too since everyone said it was breathtakingly beautiful. Sadly, what we didn’t know is to see the things everyone was telling us about require leaving Phuket on a boat to tour the smaller islands nearby. We didn’t plan accordingly so we missed the islands completely.
If we had it to do over again knowing all that we know now we would have visited Bangkok and Pattaya just like we did only instead of flying to Phuket we would have flown to Singapore because it was the same cost of the flight to Phuket and instead of spending all that money we did on hotels we would have taken the four day Royal Caribbean cruise that stops in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and Phuket, Thailand. By doing this we would have gotten to see two additional countries and on the Phuket leg of the trip we could have done the Phi Phi Island tour that we missed out on. You see, we could have done the Phi Phi Island tour without a cruise ship, but this would have required an extra day’s stay in Phuket due to how the boats that tour the area operate. We could have planned better and managed the tour anyway, but it would have been so much more fun to have had the Royal Caribbean Cruise experience so that we could have crossed two more countries off our bucket list.
We definitely learned a big lesson for future trips! Going forward we will study more about our travel destinations, the surrounding areas and alternative possibilities before traveling to make the most of our travel days and dollars!
