Traveling With Pets

This following is a guest post by “Famous Ashley Grant”. Ashley is a writer and photographer based in Tampa, Fla. Ashley loves to travel and is currently shopping for a dog. As we got to talking about that and her hopes of traveling with her new furry friend she revealed memories of what it’s been like to travel with a pet in the past and what she plans to do in the future to make traveling with pets a little easier. Here’s what she had to say:
When I was younger, I would go on road trips with my family and I remember how hard it was to travel with our little Maltese Liberty. As much as Liberty loved riding in the car, he would get anxious at times especially on longer trips. When I get my new furry friend which I’m planning on naming Cesar (long story ha-ha!) I’m going to take what I learned from traveling with Liberty as well as stories I’ve read recently and hopefully use that to have a more enjoyable experience of traveling with a pet:
First, for road trips I’ll likely check in with my pet’s vet and see if motion sickness medication might be a good option. I recall one too many times that Liberty got sick in the car. I’ll also be sure to stop every two hours especially for longer drives to let Cesar run around at a rest stop for a while before hopping back into the vehicle. We’ll also make sure to keep plenty of water on hand lest the pup gets dehydrated!
As for flights- I’ll start with a trial run somewhere fast. I plan on getting a lap dog so I’m already lucky that I won’t have to worry as much about the weight of the pup as I’ve read many tales about large fees for large dogs similar to fees you can incur for heavy luggage. I’ll also make sure that my pup is up to date on all vaccinations and has proof of it since I’ve learned that some carriers won’t allow your furry friend on board if you don’t have proof they are up to date on them!
I also plan to heed the warning of a Huffington Post piece that said to “Purchase a kennel that has room for your pet to turn around and stand without hitting its head. If your pet hasn’t traveled before, spend some time getting the animal used to being in the carrier.”
I even found out there are cruises that allow pets! So maybe I’ll even get to bring Cesar places by land AND by water. That would be so cool! Then again, if worse comes to worst and the traveling with my pup Cesar doesn’t go well I’ll probably go the kennel route, but I sure am hoping it won’t come to that. Of course, I guess the biggest and most important step to do before anything is to go ahead and buy a dog!
