It’s that time of year when everyone is thinking about getting in shape for summer vacation! If you are like a lot of other travelers you likely have some exciting plans for this summer and if it involves going on a cruise then you know the likelihood of needing to look good in a swimsuit skyrockets with every port of call. So, without further ado, we thought we’d offer up some simple ideas for getting in shape for your upcoming summer cruise and any other travel you may be planning!
.) Don’t drink your calories: Did you know that one 12 oz. Coke has 120 calories? Considering that standard dietary restrictions state you shouldn’t consume more than 2,000 calories per day, a multiple soda per day habit can wreak havoc on your calorie intake! Drink water instead! If you need something fizzy consider sparkling water with a squeeze of lime or lemon. Not only will it give you the feel of a soda indulgence, you’ll barely take in any calories with this easy swap. While we’re talking about drinks you should go ahead and skip alcohol too. That margarita you had at dinner last night could have easily been 500 calories! Do you think that glass of wine was better than that mixed cocktail? Nope! A 6 oz. glass of wine can be 90-120 calories- that’s more calories per ounce than a can of soda.
.) Go for a 30-minute walk daily: It’s true. Something as simple as a daily 30-minute lackadaisical stroll through your neighborhood or a local park is all you need to get on the healthy train. Don’t have 30 minutes to devote every day of the week? Step it up to a more intense workout such as running or riding your bike at a speed of more than 10 miles per hour for 30 minutes every other day.
.) Only eat half of your dessert: For most people they just want the sweetness of the dessert, but don’t actually need the entire thing to feel satisfied. Split it with your sweetie and you’ll not only get to indulge, you will have a romantic moment as well.
.) Take the stairs and park further away from stores: Simple tricks like this get your body more physical activity than usual and every bit of effort counts when you’re trying to get in shape. [Let me be honest here, when it’s over 110 degrees here in Arizona, I’m going to find the closest parking spot I can to the store I can!]
.) Amp up your fruit and veggie intake: It’s been famously touted by many a fitness guru that not all calories are created equal. Your body burns more calories to digest a 150 calorie apple vs. a 150 calorie snack cake for example!
.) Be realistic in your goals: Let’s face it, weight loss isn’t easy. Committing to be healthier is one thing, but dangerous fad diets are a bad idea. The last thing you want is to get violently ill because you tried to lose too much weight too fast before your travel dates. Don’t do anything that puts your calorie intake too low and discuss all fitness and diet ideas with your doctor before you begin a weight loss regimen.
